Welcome to our live coverage of US politics including the war with Iran.

There is confusion and quite a bit of chaos in the Strait of Hormuz as the US undertakes “Project Freedom” to escort vessels in the vital waterway.

Iran claimed that its missiles targeted a US warship that close to the strait on Monday, local time.

Tehran said it was fired upon after it “ignored a warning” that it was in violation of “maritime rules”.

But the US has said none of its ships had been struck. It later added that two US flagged merchant vessels had transited through the strait.

Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates has confirmed that an Iranian drone hit one of its oil tankers.

Abu Dhabi said there were no injuries but said the move was an “act of piracy” by Iran.
