An environmental protester that gatecrashed Woodside Energy’s annual general meeting is the son of assistant climate change and energy minister Josh Wilson.

Oscar Wilson was one of 30 climate activists that protested at last week’s meeting, the Australian reports. The group were demonstrating against Woodside Energy’s plans to drill for gas at Scott Reef.

As chief executive Liz Westcott started speaking, protesters began chanting “don’t be so reckless”. One activist even stormed the stage to grab a microphone, before being removed by security.

In a statement, the Fremantle MP said he respected the right to protest.

“I support the right of all Australians to take part in our democracy including through activism that can be robust, but should always be peaceful,” Mr Wilson said.

“That has been part of my own political experience and it’s a form of expression that must be protected, recognising that activism is not necessarily perfect and that its power comes from those who practice activism in keeping with principles of constructive engagement and respect.”

At the event, held at Crown Perth, protesters also smuggled in signs which read “Hands off Scott Reef” and Bluetooth speakers which played whale noises, Sky News reports.

Scott Reef is Australia’s largest oceanic reef system and is located approximately 425 kilometres north of Broome.

It is home to the endangered dusky sea snake and supports a diverse range of marine life.

The Browse Joint Venture, supported by Woodside, aims to drill into reservoirs in this area which hold about 13.9 trillion cubic feet of dry gas and 390 million barrels of condensate, or liquid gas, according to the environment and energy department.
