A former swimming team physiotherapist accused of sexually abusing an Olympic athlete and maintaining unlawful relationships with elite swimmers during their childhood has been committed to stand trial.

Peter John Wells, 55, appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday, where he was formally committed to face six charges in the District Court.

When asked if he wished to respond to the allegations, Mr Wells maintained his innocence.

“I plead not guilty, Your Honour,” Mr Wells said.

The sexual assault charge relates to an alleged incident with a former Olympic medallist.

He also faces five charges of unlawful relationship with a child under 16.

One of the five he is accused of maintaining an unlawful relationship with is also a former Olympic medallist.

Mr Wells had previously faced three additional sexual assault charges involving two alleged victims, including another former Olympian, but those charges were dropped by the prosecution.

Mr Wells has held senior roles across Australian swimming and elite sport for more than two decades.

Following the charges, the Office of the Health Ombudsman took immediate action and imposed strict conditions on Mr Wells’ registration.

He is barred from treating anyone under 18 or any female patients and must only practise at approved locations.

The matter will now proceed to the District Court.
