A man is recovering in hospital after he was allegedly attacked by a man with a steak knife while walking his dog out the front of a pub in Sydney’s inner-west.

Police were called to the Sackville Hotel on Darling Street in Rozelle just after 7pm on Sunday “following reports of an assault”.

“Upon arrival, officers attached to Leichardt Police Area Command were told a 43-year-old man had been walking through the premises with his dog – a french bulldog – when another man – who was not known to him – allegedly kicked his dog and assaulted him with a steak knife,” police said.

“The unknown man left the scene prior to police arrival.”

NSW Paramedics treated the 43-year-old at the scene for lacerations to his head and arm, before taking him to hospital in a stable condition.

At about 1am on Monday, officers searched a man’s home on Hargraves Ave in Punchbowl, where they arrested a 53-year-old man before taking him to Campsie Police Station.

At the station, he was charged with wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, driving a motor vehicle with a suspended license, affray, and common assault.

He was refused bail, and will appear at Bankstown Local Court on Monday.

NewsWire have asked NSW Police for an update on the health of the dog.
