The Socceroos will finalise their FIFA World Cup preparations with a friendly international against Switzerland in June.

The game will take place at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium on June 7 (AEST), a week before Australia’s World Cup opener against Turkiye in Vancouver

“It will be a great final hit-out for us before the World Cup commences … Switzerland is a strong nation,” Socceroos coach Tony Popovic.

Switzerland has also qualified for the World Cup and is No.19 in the FIFA rankings, eight places better than the Socceroos.

The Murat Yakin-coached Swiss, who are captained by Sunderland star Granit Xhaka, will be Australia’s first European opponents under Popovic’s tenure, which started in September 2024.

The Socceroos’ World Cup squad will be finalised before the game, which takes place a week after Australia’s friendly against Mexico at Pasadena’s Rose Bowl.

Football Australia’s executive director of football Heather Garriock said: “Facing a European nation of Switzerland’s calibre in our final match before the tournament is a valuable opportunity to finalise preparations and test ourselves against a different style of football..

“Football Australia has been focused on ensuring the Socceroos are well prepared for the World Cup.”
