Broncos fans were left raging after a highly controversial decision in their 35-31 defeat to the Cowboys.

The reigning premiers led 30-24 with 15 minutes remaining and thought they had extended their lead to 10 points when Tom Chester appeared to drop a kick which allowed Brendan Piakura to steal in and score.

But after the decision was reviewed by the Bunker, they applied the disruptor rule and disallowed the try.

The disruptor rule penalises attacking players who chase kicks but interfere with the catcher without making a genuine attempt to catch the ball themselves.

That was not how many of the Broncos fans inside the Suncorp Stadium saw the decision in question as boos rang around the ground.

To add insult to injury, Chester scored at the other end moments later — and the conversion levelled up the scores.

Scott Drinkwater then kicked a drop goal to hand the Cowboys the lead with three minutes left on the clock, before Heilum Luki went over in the final seconds to seal the victory.

The result was a bitter one to take for Broncos supporters given the controversial nature of Piakura’s disallowed try.

And the fans were quick to vent their frustration on social media as their side suffered a third defeat of the season.

Bestsuperver said: “You can thank the f***ing video ref for that (result)…. The worst I have seen for quite a while.”

JackA121212 reacted: “Broncos should have been up by 12 with ten to go.”

JoshorJoash added: “What was the whole point of this new disruptor rule again? What a f***ing s***show.”

And Mike Bromley said: “Absolutely robbed well done boys. Disgraceful video referee.”

The result leaves the Broncos down in 10th with three wins and three defeats from their opening six games.

The Cowboys move up to fourth, two points adrift of early pacesetters, the Panthers.
