Donald Trump has said the US is in “serious discussions” with “a new and more reasonable regime” in Tehran.
But he has darkly warned that the US will “completely obliterate” Iran’s power stations and the oil hub of Kharg Island if a deal is not made.
Last Friday, the US president said he was extending the deadline to agree to a ceasefire until 6 April.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Monday, US time, that Iran would “never be allowed” to enact a flagged proposal to toll the Strait of Hormuz, which would effectively give Tehran control of the key waterway.
Iran has insisted it has had no direct communications with the US.
Meanwhile, Iran’s parliament is looking at exiting the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, an agreement designed to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.
