Being “good” isn’t enough for Gold Coast coach Damien Hardwick, who wants a “great” Suns outfit.
The Suns have started the AFL season in a positive manner with convincing home wins over Geelong and West Coast.
However, despite the victories and respective winning margins of 56 and 59 points, Hardwick wants more from his team on Saturday at the MCG against the Richmond.
The Suns were particularly disappointed by their second-half weekend performance against the Eagles after leading the visitors by 62 point at half-time.
“We’ve got a duty for us when we put on the jumper to play a certain way,” Suns wingman Sam Clohesy said on Tuesday.
“We probably did let it off a little bit (against the Eagles), so it’s just the importance to stay on it and really make the other sides in competition worry about us.
“‘Dimma’ (Hardwick) always says being good stops you from being great.
“It is hard not to look at positives when you win by 10 goals, but there’s definitely room for improvement in us for sure, especially that second-half.
“As much as they lifted their intent, we didn’t lift ours as much as we should have.
“We’ll come out firing this weekend.”
Clohesy said the competition for places at the Suns meant players could not afford to take their feet off the pedal.
“No one’s complacent. Anyone can come in or out,” he said.
“We’ve got a Brownlow medallist (Matt Rowell) to come back in, Charlie Ballard’s coming back and we’ve got blokes playing in the twos that are just unbelievable, so it’s very exciting for the club.
“There is that pressure on you, but it makes everyone rise to a new level out on the ground.
“I’m so excited for the next few years and I reckon we can go a long, long way.”
