After a fairly hot Saturday that saw the temperature push over 30 degrees, Brisbane and other parts of Queensland could cop some severe weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology says thunderstorms are likely on Sunday and while the rain isn’t likely to be heavy, there is the possibility of hail and strong wind.

In a news release, senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said that even Saturday would “see the chance of showers or thunderstorms developing in some parts [of Queensland], namely across those north-western parts of the state central areas and pushing down to the south-east for the most part”.

“Rainfall totals will be low, but we may see some locally damaging winds or large hail across parts of the far south-east.”

The bureau has predicted a rainy Sunday with a top temperature of 33 degrees, and the chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.

“We’ve got a couple of low-pressure troughs lingering across those northern and central parts of Australia, continuing to generate showers and thunderstorms through much of the Kimberley in Western Australia, the Northern Territory, Central Australia, pushing through southern Queensland and northern and inland New South Wales,” Bradbury said.

The BoM website currently also says there is a 70 per cent chance of rain on Monday.
